Jackie Phillips currently serves as the Senate President. As President, Jackie acts as the head of the Legislative Branch within Student Government. She chairs Senate meetings every Tuesday, oversees each Senate committee, works with Senators on projects and initiatives, and ensures that Senate is running smoothly and effectively.
Jackie is a third-generation Gator from Jacksonville, Florida. She is a Family, Youth, and Community Sciences major, minoring in Educational Studies. She is planning to pursue a career in Student Affairs after graduating this upcoming December.
She started her involvement in Senate during Fall 2015 after being elected as the Broward Senator. Since then, she has continued her involvement within Senate as the Jennings Senator. Within Senate, Jackie has authored and voted on legislation to further our campus’ development and made positive strides to enhance campus life. She worked with former Student Body Treasurer Nicholas Carre to install an ice machine in the Student Recreational Fitness Center after authoring and passing legislation supporting this initiative. She also served as a member of the Diversity Outreach Ad-Hoc Committee, during which she researched application and acceptance numbers for minority students at UF and compared our programs for high-risk students to those at other institutions. However, her most significant involvement in while in the Student Senate has been the opportunity to serve as the Information and Communication Chairwoman for the past two terms.
During her tenure as Chairwoman, the I&C Committee greatly improved Senate’s outreach efforts on social media and increased awareness of open seats. The Committee brought students more up-to-date on things happening in the Senate Chamber through the first-ever “Month in Review” graphics. They also spread awareness of involvement opportunities within Senate and Student Government through two successful Meet Your Senator Day events.
As Senate President, Jackie wants to work with each Senator to ensure that their ideas and suggestions from their constituents are heard and accomplished. In addition, through Senate’s successes, she hopes to continue to build on the reputation of Student Senate. She also plans to increase the awareness of the Senate body to the campus as a whole, and ensure that all students understand the responsibility that Senate is charged with. She is optimistic about working together to achieve this goal.
Outside of Senate, Jackie has served two terms on the Food Service Advisory Committee, during which she has advocated for healthier food options on campus and provided student feedback on ways to improve the food service program. She has also voiced student opinions to the Department of Housing regarding policy and procedures of on-campus housing as an active member of the Campus Student Housing Committee. Additionally, Jackie has been an active member of the Inter-Residence Hall Association (IRHA) throughout her time at UF. She has served as the IRHA Secretary and more recently, the IRHA President.
