Panel Hearing Process
The Student Honor Court is comprised of Law students who conduct the hearing. The
accused student is represented by a Defense Counsel staff member who will speak
on the accused’s behalf during the hearing. A member of the Attorney General staff
will act in the role of prosecutor representing the interests of the University
of Florida and the professor. In a trial, the jury will be composed of three students
selected at random and three Associate Justices of the Honor Court who are elected
representatives from each college. If the accused is found guilty by the jury, a
Penalty Hearing before the Chancellor and two Associate Justices is held to recommend
an appropriate sanction. The recommendation of the jury and any sanctions are forwarded
to the Dean of Students who makes a decision. In a hearing, the Chancellor and four
hearing officers will determine responsibility and sanctions that are forwarded
to the Dean of Students.
Student Conduct Committee
Composed of students and faculty members, the Student Conduct Committee is the alternative
to an informal administrative hearing available to all students in the judicial
process. The committee is composed of five to eight students, faculty and staff
representatives appointed by the Vice President of Student Affairs at the University.
This committee determines the facts of the case and makes recommendations concerning
responsibility and the imposition of a sanction to the Dean of Students. The student
has the opportunity to meet with the Dean of Students prior to a final decision
being made on the case.
Appeals
If a student requests counsel to remain on their case then counsel may remain in
an advisory capacity.
