For over a century, Student Government Finance has taken pride in funding what is truly important to the students at the University of Florida. From funding student organizations to sponsoring student projects, and everything in between, Student Government Finance remains at the forefront when serving the University of Florida’s students.
The funding necessary to complete these tasks is provided to Student Government Finance through the Activity and Service Fee Budget. This budget accrues when each student pays his or her tuition. Specifically, each student pays $19.06 per credit hour into this budget, for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. The accumulation of these fees, for the 2017-2018 fiscal year, amounts to $20,411,352.00 budget, which is used by Student Government Finance to fund a variety of activities.
The Activity and Services Fees are authorized under Florida Statute 1009.24, which states, “The student activity and service fees shall be expended for the lawful purposes to benefit the student body in general.” Fees are collected by the University of Florida’s Registrar’s Office as a component of tuition in the amount recommended annually by the Local Fee Committee and approved by the State University System’s Board of Regents.
Subsequently, Student Government administers the allocation of the Activity and Service Fees and divides them into four main entities called the Big 4: the J. Wayne Reitz Union, Recreational Sports, Student Government, and the Department of Student Activities and Involvement. The Budget and Appropriations Committee of the Student Senate then holds hearings for each entity of the Big 4 in the summer to ensure that the funding continues to be spent in the best interest of the students.
Likewise, the Budget and Appropriations Committee holds hearings to establish a budget for next fiscal year each Spring. All student organizations can be found on GatorConnect. Moreover, the Activity and Service Fee Budget is utilized by Student Government to continue funding for its agencies such as Student Government Productions and ACCENT Speaker’s Bureau, as well as the Free Bike Repair, Free Printing Lab, and a variety of other great services that benefit all students at the University of Florida.
The University of Florida’s Student Government has one of the largest Student Government budgets in the nation! With this budget, Student Government strives to continually improve the student experience at the University of Florida, while operating in a fiscally responsible manner.
