In fall
2005, Maryam began her journey as a Florida Gator and knew she wanted to leave
her mark in every way possible. She began her involvement with the Hispanic
Student Association as a director for the 2006 Hispanic Heritage Month Opening
Ceremony and with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Council
(CLASSC) as treasurer. During her
sophomore year, Maryam was elected as the treasurer of the 2007 Hispanic
Heritage Month celebration, managing a $60,000 budget, and also served as
assistant director of Multicultural Affairs within Student Government. During
her junior year, she proudly served as Student Government Cabinet Chairwomen
where her commitment to solid programming can still be seen today. One of the
highlights of her college career was serving as the President of the
Multicultural Greek Council.
Throughout her time at Florida, Maryam has
been committed to advocating for underrepresented students and leaving a
lasting impact. This can be seen through her commitment as a resident assistant
at the Lakeside Complex as well as a Preview Staffer working to improve the
experience of freshman students at UF. Her experience, enthusiasm, and passion
to make this campus inclusive to all are key ingredients as she serves as
Student Body Treasurer of the University of Florida.
She was
elected as the 93rd Student Body Treasurer on Feb. 25, 2009 with over 57
percent of the vote. She is excited to serve a one-year term as the
administrator and Chief Financial Officer of a 13.5 million dollar budget. In
times of economic uncertainty, Maryam will work tirelessly to ensuring that all
A&S fees are used to bring value back to the over 55,000 students at the
University of Florida.
Maryam is originally
from Miami and attended Barbara Goleman Senior High School. She graduated in
Spring 2009 with a bachelor in sociology from the University of Florida and in
Fall 2009, she will pursue a Masters of Arts degree in Public Affairs.
Maryam
lives by the words of William James, “The
greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it."
